DEPOT

Depots were used to purchase passenger tickets and arrange for transportation of freight that was either being  bought or sold and to send messages via telegraph.  This small depot was built as a portable or temporary depot.  It was not uncommon to move such buildings on a railroad flat car to a town that temporarily  needed a depot.   This Depot was originally used in Lucas, Iowa and later moved to Brooks, Iowa, a small town 27 miles west, and a little south of Creston.   The building was probably constructed of leftover materials, leading to poor construction, with studs and floor joists widely spaced, and several kinds of siding used inside and out.  We believe the bench and stove are original to the building.

C. B. & Q. Portable Depot last used at Brooks Iowa.
