HAWKEYE CITY

In  C.  J.  Colbys, Centennial Sketches, 1876, he writes “Hawkeye City was laid out, (1857) but never built on in section 11 Douglas Township by the Myers brothers, and has long, since ceased to exist.”

At the Union County Recorders Office there are dozens of records of Hawkeye City lots being bought and sold, no doubt many by land speculators thinking the railroad would soon arrive.  Even some maps as early as 1855 show a railroad through Union County.  The Civil War halted the railroads construction in the county until 1868.  Since the railroad plans were put on hold, so where are the plans for Hawkeye City.  There is no evidence any buildings were ever built.    The plat for Hawkeye City is recorded but strangely, the beginning point of the survey is not, making it impossible to tell exactly where in section 11 the lots were located.  Glen L. Rhine, doing research in 1959,  believed the location was in the southern part of McKinley Park near where the Girl Scout Cabin was located.

The blue shaded area on the map is the present day location of McKinley Park.

Note the naming of Railroad Street full ten years before the railroad existed.
