MONETTE

Monette was a community in section 34, New Hope Township and consisted of a few farmsteads, a general store and post office.  A star mail route ran from Albany, Missouri to Winterset Iowa and made a mail drop at Monette.  When the mail route was discontinued, the post office was moved to Zahlia.  Surprising to this author Monette actually existed before the railroad was established.  The Chicago, Great Western railroad came through in 1887, and a depot and  side tracks were established at Monette in 1889.  There were stockyards adjacent to the railroad.  The town was used as a shipping point for local farmers.

About 1898 a school house was built and the United Brethren organized a church and met at the school house until 1904  when they laid the foundation for a new church directly east of the school. T he church was torn down in the late 1950s. The school closed in the 1940s and the railway was  removed in 1986.
